By Design is a group of twelve well-known textile artists and has achieved some fame (or should that be notoriety?) for its working method. At the outset of a new project, each member makes two identical (or as near identical as possible) starter pieces. One of these will be completed by its original maker and the second substantially altered – sometimes beyond recognition – by three randomly chosen group members in turn. For viewers of our exhibitions, a real fascination has been to compare the resulting pairs of pieces and trace their journeys.
Themes for the exhibitions have always evolved from a brain storming session, sometimes more than one. Thus the idea of ‘Just One Day’ was born and a summer date decided. The construction of this latest exhibition (their ninth) has posed as exciting a challenge as its predecessors. Some members decided that 25th June 2015 should be treated as an ordinary day, others made special journeys to particular places, others had no choice. And what an eclectic, colourful collection has emerged! Where there was a specific geographic location, the pairs of quilts have strong resonance, as can be seen in those set in America or that based on Lavenham. Some artists have been able to steer the group piece closer to their original intentions; for others this proved impossible and the finished quilts have only the starting fabric in common.
