TrywerynThe drowning of Capel Celyn near Bala in 1965 by Liverpool Corporation was pivotal to the growing sense of nationhood in Wales. The quilt records the legal document authorising the drowning, the futile protests by the families and their supporters, the names of the lost farms and the iconic graffiti which to this day reminds us to ‘Remember Tryweryn’. The quilt is also a tribute to Martha Jane Roberts, the last teacher at the village school before it was forced to close, who later became my first needlework teacher. It is her handwriting in the school log which recorded the children’s trauma on seeing their village destroyed and she is seen standing on the right of the lower picture.

Mae’r cwilt yn cofnodi’r dogfennau cyfreithiol i awdurdodi’r boddi, y protestiadau ofer gan y teuluoedd a’u cefnogwyr, enwau’r ffermydd a gollwyd, a’r graffiti eiconig sy’n dal i’n hatgoffa heddiw i gofio Tryweryn. Mae’r cwilt hefyd yn deyrnged i Martha Jane Roberts, yr athrawes olaf yn ysgol y pentref cyn y gorfodwyd hi i gau – yn ddiweddarach hi oedd fy athrawes bwytho gyntaf. Gwelir ei llawysgrifen hi yn llyfr log yr ysgol sy’n cofnodi artaith y plant wrth weld dinistrio eu pentref, ac fe’i gwelir yn sefyll ar y dde yn y llun gwaelod.
