Spirit of the Celts

Ysbryd y Celtiaid
|
A collaborative project between 26 quiltmakers from Wales, Scotland and
Northern Ireland, the Spirit of the Celts exhibition opened at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham in 2011 and has since toured to Scotland, France, Northern Ireland and Wales. This exhibition shows 7 of the Cwilt Cymru quilts from Spirit of the Celts. The quilts reflect the individuality and diversity of their makers, and yet they are bound by common threads of a shared culture. Many pieces were inspired by the rich inheritance of legends and beliefs – the power of the Celtic head and the Mabinogion’s Branwen; others refer to the enigmatic Celtic carved standing stone; to historical events such as the Gododdin, the oldest Welsh poem, and Owain Glyndwr’s uprising; and to surviving artefacts such as the Trawsfynydd tankard. The full exhibition will be shown at Oriel Ynys Môn, Anglesey from August 3 to September 15, 2013. The second half of this exhibition shows individual pieces by the members of Cwilt Cymru. Cwilt Cymru Cwilt Cymru is an exhibiting group of contemporary quilters from Wales. The members live scattered across the country, and as individuals have exhibited internationally and throughout the UK, and the group includes teachers and award-winning textile artists. Spirit of the Celts was their first exhibition together. Cwilt Cymru are currently working on a new exhibition for 2014 on the theme of Connection. Judith Barker Bethan M.
