Quiltfest 2015 Winners From Region 13 in the Wider World
Red Equus by Dilys Fronks
This quilt was made
for a challenge entitled ‘IN THE RED’, organised by Christine Porter as a
touring exhibition in the Grosvenor quilt shows. A horse is not a normal
response to the expression ‘in the red’ but as it was made entirely of red
fabric, I felt that it fitted the bill.
The challenge for me
was to make the flowing shapes of the horse contrast with the regular angles of
the patchwork. Raw edge applique and
free-motion quilting softened the horse shapes and quilting down the middle of
the patchwork squares exaggerated the angles and fragmented them even more.
This quilt won the ‘Visitors’ Choice’ vote for which I received a
Husqvarna Opel 670 sewing machine.

window in Chester Cathedral. While visiting I noticed that many features of the Cathedral were
dedicated to the memory of loved ones from many years ago, in some cases
centuries old. In much the same spirit, I have made these in memory of a dear friend
who brought so much colour into my life. I have hand dyed the bright fabric, foundation pieced each piece and
machine quilted, sometimes using a twin needle. I was lucky to have the
first quilt chosen to be featured on the front cover of this year’s Quilters’
