Houses near Uig, Skye

H47cm x W79cm

Coming in to Skye from the Outer Hebrides, there are many groups of houses dipping in  and out of the hiills towards the quay at Uig

Grenitote, North Uist

H69cm x W112cm

This is a small farming community set on the sea in  a comely inlet.  North Uist is very low lying with a sense of sea and sky permeating every view.

Mull Skyline

H37cm x W 74cm

Travelling on the ferry from Barra back to Oban on the mainland, the hills of Mull on a fine day pierce the sky and dominate the scene.

Callanish Stones 3

H79cm x W99cm

Third in the Callanish Stones series, these stones are so striking and memorable that any number of permutations of their combinations make wonderful images.

North Harris from the Pentland Road, Lewis

H44cm x W50cm

These two pieces are an example of what can be achieved with smaller work.  Using a mixture of hand dyed fabrics, specially dyed to create specific skies, as well as commercially sourced cottons.  These are both machine pieced and hand quilted.

St Kilda from North Uist

H34cm x W41cm

House on the Golden Road

H69cm x W100cm

The composition of this piece is a fine expression of how well the islanders know their territory, how to shelter from the prevailing weather. The Golden Road winds its way along the east coast of the isle of Harris in and out of secluded bays and coves of all shapes and sizes.  It is a magical place with surpises round every corner.

Sheiling on the Moor

H94cm x W99cm

How dramatically the colours change on the moors in the autumn on Lewis.  Vibrant reds and purples, burnt sienna and umbers sing along beside the lush greens by the river bed.  Machine pieced and hand quilted.

Abandoned House, Loch Roag

H87cm x W112cm

This piece is inspired by a house to be found on Lewis near the village of Callanish.  Looking from the village this house seems happily situated on a rocky mound in the middle of a field.

Port nan Long, North Uist

H81cm x W112cm

Port nan Long is the place where the ferry used to pull in from Harris before the causeway was built joining the islands.  On one of the days this was studied, the light was so dazzling and slanted that it was impossible to make out any features on the houses.

Hebridean Kaleidoscope

H141cm x W100cm

A panorama of colours is seen in  the Hebridean Islands.  The quilt is made from scraps left from the landscape quilts, foundation pieced and framed with hand dyed turquoises to represent the clear colours of the water around these islands.

Sea Forms

H141cm x W100cm

This piece is made of a mixture of batik dyed and immersion dyed fabrics.  The shapes suggest shells and sea forms which is so much part of island life.
