Influenced by an ageing silkscreen of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol.  The disintegrating canvas and fading colours and prints influenced my choice of tonal values.  Hand-dyed fabrics and textured fibres were used to create an impression of disintegrating fabrics, rather than a direct interpretation – this quilt will age and fade in its own way eventually.

Mixed fibres including silks, linens, velvets and hand-dyeds.. Machine-quilted. 

Additional hand-stitching.

Inspiration evolved from the ‘back door’ architecture at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham :  the bright colours and strong geometrical lines of slatted doors prevailing against accumulated dirt - the reflection of rain in the aftermath of sunshine adding further highlights.. Hand-dyed cottons.  Machine-quilting with variegated thread.

Further photography in Bilbao, Spain:  a contemporary, glass-fronted hotel, with windows set at oblique angles,  showed reflections of a blue building opposite, along with snippets of the surrounding landscape – a ‘building within a building’.

Mixed fibres  including indigo-dyed cotton, hand-dyed cottons, silks, velvet, etc.  

Machine-quilted.

A new slant on “Log Cabin”:  my digital image of the wooden ‘log cabin’ boathouse by the lake at Hever  Castle , manipulated to add a Warhol-like colour-scheme and printed onto cotton. 

Pieced with hand-dyed cotton and silk.

Further exploration using digital manipulation of my photography:  one exposed root of a reflected tree, peeping through the water at Keston Ponds, inadvertently represented a single ‘3-dimensional branch’ within the picture.  In transition, the branches reflected at ground level have become the roots, the roots the branches,  all burrowing downwards – the tree has become the same below the ground as above.

Part of a series of quilts: my inspiration was the Guggenheim   Museum in  Bilbao , Spain showcasing the architecture of Frank Gehry.  Textures, tones and all materials were chosen to complement the reflection of a million ever-changing colours in the ‘patchwork’ of titanium plates, resembling pieced silk patches.

Mixed fibres including hand-dyed and painted cottons, silks, velvets, linen, etc.Hand-stitched appliqué.

Machine and hand-quilting with various different threads.
